My name is Kathryn, I'm a psychologist, and I suffer from a chronically misunderstood condition, Time Blindness. Look out for me selling badges at your local shopping centre, when we are finally free to roam safely again, to raise awareness for those of us who were born without an internal clock.
I believe that we all have good bits and not so good bits and that we can all improve through the power of knowledge and self-awareness. I still regularly have my own 'A-ha' moments due to the work I do. I am grateful to have a career where I am able – nay, expected – to indulge my curiosity for the human condition and build on my knowledge base. I have a, some might say annoying, need to know things and really enjoy putting the different aspects of self together to gain a deeper understanding of how we work and what we need to thrive. Can you tell that I'm pretty fun to get stuck next to at parties?
Apart from my advocacy for the Time Blind, I also get real joy when supporting clients to connect new knowledge and skills and are empowered to building a more fulfilling life. Often my role feels more like a coach or an educator and I've come to realise that for many people, the information that my profession (and its associated sisters) provides is a game-changer.
I see the value in the diversity of people and that to view us as homogenous is not just boring, it is also a real disservice to humanity. I love working with people to help them honour what they already know about themselves and to get to a place not just of self-acceptance but self-celebration!
It seems wasteful to me to have knowledge that can be helpful in people improving their own lives and to not find a way to make that accessible to people.
The purpose of Out of the Box Psychology is to take that information, squish it up into bite-sized pieces, and put it in places that you are likely to come across in the busyness of your day. Some days you'll scroll on by, but if something plants a seed in you that later grows into something meaningful, then I've succeeded with what I wanted to send out into the world.
So peek inside the box and have a look around. Take what works for you and leave the rest. If you walk away feeling a little more accepting of yourself and have some seeds of knowledge about what you can do to be your best self, then the world just got a little bit better.
